Indire is the acronym for National Institute of Documentation, Innovation and Educational Research located in Florence and divided into 3 territorial centers: Naples, Rome and Turin. In 1925, a national didactic exhibition was opened in Florence on the products of new schools under the direction of G. Calo', based on the idea of G. Lombardi Radice of a didactic as an active experience. 

 logo.jpgIn 1929 the National Didactic Museum was established to give a permanent location to the Exhibition, which in 1937 was named” National Museum of the School”. In 1954 it became an Educational Studies and Documentation Center and in 1974 a Pedagogical Documentation Library (BDP). In 2001 the BDP became a National Institute of Documentation, Innovation and Educational Research.In 2007, with the L296 / 2006, the INDIRE became ANSAS (National Agency for the Development of school autonomy), but on 1 September 2012 it became INDIRE again on the basis of Legislative Decree 98/2011.

 INDIRE together with INVALSI and the MIUR inspection body is part of the National Evaluation System for education and training. In this context, INDIRE develops actions to support teaching improvement processes and to increase the learning levels of school staff; in fact, it boasts considerable experience in the training of teaching, administrative, technical and auxiliary staff and school managers and has been the protagonist of some of the most important e-learning experiences at European level. 

 Through monitoring, database and research reports, the INDIRE  documents the phenomena related to the transformation of the curriculum in technical and professional education and work topics. In addition, it is the Erasmus + National Agency, whose area of  expertise concerns school education, higher education, adult education (Key Action 1 and Key Action 2). The Italian Unit of the Eurydice network (the European network on education and training of 37 countries), Epale (the European online platform for adult education) and the Italian unit for twinning operate at the Agency eTwinnig electronics. It carries out research in the educational field, in particular on issues concerning: introduction of ICT (Information Communication Technology) in schools; didactic methodological approaches; redevelopment of educational spaces; professional updating of school staff; self evaluation. 

 INDIRE is part of the Group of National Experts, which carries out research on the topic of new school architecture and settings for innovative teaching.Moreover worthy of mention is the "Avanguardie educative" project, which was created in 2014 by Indire and a first group of 22 schools that created innovative experiences. In fact, “Avanguardie educative” intends to realize the opportunities offered by new technologies and digital languages ​to change learning environments and offer "ideas" starting from the experience of schools, therefore to revolutionize the organization of teaching, time and school space.

 Currently there are about 800 schools taking part to the project, that in this school year will be visited by teachers during the trial year to give them adequate incentives for innovation. A school open to the evolution of knowledge is able to understand the changes and therefore improve the service offered in synergy with the demands of the territory, students, families and all the stakeholders participating in the educational dialogue.Since 1996 it has also been a member of European schoolnet, the network of 37 European Ministries of Education which promotes cooperation among  European schools. The INDIRE by virtue of its roots, has an historical archive that preserves a rich nineteenth-century documentary heritage specialized in the collection of documentary material of historical and pedagogical interest.
